- When women in late pregnancy lie supine, the uterus compresses the inferior vena cava and aorta. This reduces maternal cardiac output causing supine hypotension and affects placental blood flow
- To alleviate this aortocaval compression, gravity can be used to displace the uterus. An effective way of assisting uterine displacement is through the use of a wedge under the woman’s right hip
- Place wedge under the patient’s right hip to tilt the uterus to the left while maintaining patient’s comfort. An additional wedge or pillow support may be placed under the patient’s uterus on the opposite side for further comfort and support
- Wipe clean with a hospital grade disinfectant, wipe dry
